In the quiet streets of Limassol, Cyprus where the Mediterranean sun casts its relentless heat, an all-too-familiar atrocity unfolded. A woman, alerted by the desperate cries of tiny voices, approached a dumpster. What she discovered inside was horrific: three kittens tied up in a plastic bag and discarded like rubbish. The cruelty of their fate was magnified by the grim reality of one kitten, who had clawed its way out of the bag and was found swimming in the putrid fluid of decomposing waste. As if this wasn't enough, the despicable person who committed this heinous act went even further, securing the dumpster lid to ensure the kittens would suffer agonizing deaths in the scorching heat.
Tragically, this story is not unique or uncommon. In Cyprus, as in many other countries such as Greece, there are those who view animals as worthless. Cats and dogs are often considered disposable-nothing more than trash to be thrown away. It’s a chilling reflection of the brutality some people harbor in their dark hearts. We must confront this heartbreaking reality if we are to help these animals who desperately need us to save them. There's still an immense amount of work that needs to be done and we need your support.
But in the midst of this darkness, there is light. Marina Niaou, a compassionate and tireless animal lover and rescuer, now cares for the kitten who was found swimming in the putrid fluid of decomposing waste. She has named him Button. Of all of the kittens, he is the worst affected, suffering with neurological and gastrointestinal problems. But against all odds, he has survived. (The other 3 kittens are cared for by the woman who rescued them.) Button is one of over a 90 cats Marina cares for at her sanctuary, Patch of Heaven Animal Haven. Many of these animals bear the scars—both physical and emotional—of the horrendous abuse they’ve endured.
Marina and Button
Her sanctuary is aptly named—a true patch of heaven for animals who have known nothing but pain. However, the responsibility of caring for so many animals, most of whom have complex medical needs due to severe abuse, is immense. The costs are staggering, and the emotional toll is profound. Yet, Marina persists, driven by a deep love for these animals and a fierce determination to give them the life they deserve. Every animal she saves is a victory over cruelty-a testament to the power of love and kindness, even in the face of unimaginable suffering. But she cannot do it alone. Marina relies on the generosity of people like you who share her commitment to saving these precious lives.
In Marina’s words, each donation, no matter how small, is a lifeline. It is a testament to the belief that every life matters, that no creature should be discarded like rubbish. Your support not only helps provide food, medical care, and shelter but also sends a powerful message that these animals are not alone—that there are people who care, who are willing to stand against cruelty, and who believe in the possibility of a better world.
